How to Get to Heaven
By Roxanne Prentiss

Many people believe that the answer to the question of how to get to heaven is being a "good" person. For some, being "good" means not being "bad." One or more of the following may describe you:

1. You havenít murdered anyone.
2. You donít steal.
3. You donít curse, too much.
4. You donít lie, too often.
5. Youíre not a drug addict.
6. You donít cheat.
7. You rarely gamble.

Your conscience is clear because you arenít nearly as "bad" as the people you read about in the newspapers or see on television. Youíre just like everybody else you know, and you canít all being going to hell. So, youíre pretty sure that, after you die, God is going to let you into His heaven, right?

If you only knew the Truth!

Many others believe that the answer to the question of how to get to heaven is in doing "good" deeds. One or more of the following may describe you:

1. You give money to beggars standing on street corners.
2. Youíre actively involved in civic and community affairs.
3. You generously donate your time, your talent and/or your money to non-profit and charitable organizations.

Youíre better than most of the people you know. In fact, youíre so good that youĎre convinced that, after you die, God will absolutely let you into His heaven, right?

If you only knew the Truth!

There are others who believe that their religious beliefs will be their ticket into heaven. This may describe you:

1. You embrace religious beliefs that tell you how to live a "spiritual" life.
2. Your religion may tell you that there is a God but it does not tell you how to have a personal relationship with Him.

Despite all of your religious rituals, your religion does not guarantee that following those rituals will get you into Godís heaven, right? The truth is that there is only one way for any human being to get to heaven and that is to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Every human being is, by nature, a sinful being. The Bible says that our efforts at doing "good deeds" are not acceptable in the sight of God. God alone is holy. God alone is good. So, God has made a way for sinful human beings to enter into His heaven.

Since God is the only perfect Being in all the universe, He came to earth 2,000 years ago, as a man. His mother was a virgin by the name of Mary, who was not impregnated by a man, but by the Holy Spirit of the Living God. She gave birth to a God-man, the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Godís laws required that a life be taken to save a life. Mankind was so sinful that the animal sacrifices of the Jewish people could no longer cleanse them of their sins. So, God sacrificed Himself, through the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ, so that our sins could be forgiven through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. During His time on earth, Jesus led a perfect, sinless life.

Jesus Christ died on a cross. He was buried in a tomb for three days and, on the third day, He was raised from the dead. After forty days, He returned to heaven, where He currently reigns. He will return to earth a second time to claim those who have confessed their belief in Him.

Jesus died so that those who believe on Him would no longer be condemned to an eternity apart from God. If you want to be assured of going to heaven after you die, and you believe that Jesus Christ died to save you from the penalty for your sins, please say the following prayer:

Dear God, I confess that I am a sinner. I believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins. Please forgive my sins. I pray that Jesus will come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. In Jesusí name I pray. Amen.

If you prayed that prayer, and meant it, please let someone else know about your decision to be saved. It is important that you join a local church and tell them about your decision, as well. The pastor and leaders of that church will help you as you continue your life of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Welcome to the Family! See you in heaven!

"All have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God" - Romans 3:23

"If we claim to be without sin, we deceive
ourselves and the truth is not in us." - 1 John 3:16

"For God so loved the world that he gave
his one and only Son, that whoever believes
in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and
just and will forgive us our sins and
purify us from all unrighteousness." - 1 John 1:9

"For we know that our old self was crucified
with him so that the body of sin might be
done away with, that we should no longer
be slaves to sin - because anyone who has
died has been freed from sin." Romans 6:6,7
You can Receive Christ as Your personal savior right now through faith and prayer.

God knows your heart, and isn't concerned so much with the wording necessarily as He is the attitude of your heart. The following is a suggested prayer:

"Lord Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner and that I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be."

Does this prayer express what is in your heart? If so, pray this prayer as your own, and Christ will come into your heart as He promised.

What Now?

"...Confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus..." (Romans 10:9) Good news is meant to be shared!
