When I was a little girl, I loved to wrap my arms around my Daddy’s waist and stand on top of his big shoes. He would walk around the house with my little feet moving in sync with his Daddy-sized steps. My only part in the game was to hold on tight. Life was fun, good and safe. Oh, I had little upsets that seemed larger than life for a young girl, but mostly my life hummed along with carefree ease.
As an adult, life wasn’t always a "Daddy Dance", but I know how fortunate I am to have memories of a happy, simple childhood. This is a blessing that I never forget. Many children don’t grow up in a safe, free and easy home. I have met and talked to people, often, who had a much harder childhood than I. Interestingly, even these people know and understand what a Daddy should be. Many hold in their hearts a dream of a Daddy. Safely tucked away in their imaginations, they ride on Daddy shoes while they giggle and hold on tight.
As Christians, we have that kind of a Daddy. We have a Daddy that loves us more than life and our only job is to hold on tight to His word.
"I hold tight to your statutes; O Lord do not let me be put to shame. I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free." (Psalm 119:31-32 NIV)
This verse ushers me back to a simpler time; a time when I rarely walked. Children never seem to concern themselves with falling. They love to run. They aren’t laden with burdens, but completely free – and in that freedom they run! They run, but always under the watchful protective eye of the Lord.
When I read some verses such as this:
"Since we live by the spirit, let us keep in step with the spirit." (Galatians 5:25 NIV)
Or this one:
"In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps." (Proverbs 16:9 NIV)
I picture myself holding tight to Daddy’s waist, with my little shoes on his big shoes as he dances around the room. With God our life is always a "Daddy Dance" no matter in what circumstance we find ourselves. He will carry us through, if we just hold on tight and trust him.
This isn’t to say that God does all of our choosing. God allows us to make choices with our life but he never lets us get too close to the edge of disaster without calling out to us, "Careful! Watch out!" or sometimes its more direct, "You need to go this way." He doesn’t carry us kicking and screaming down a path not of our own choosing, but rather he walks with us. He lets us explore along the way but always under his watchful eye.
No matter Christians, whether we run the path of his commands with the wind whipping through our hair, or we ride on Daddy’s shoes, or he scoops us up and carries us on his shoulders. We can know for certain that whether we turn to the right or to the left we will hear a voice behind us, saying, "This is the way, walk in it."
I ran along the wooded path.
The breeze danced in my hair.
I balanced on a fallen tree.
Pretend crowds were cheering me.
I poked a stick into a mound
and watched as ants scurried all around.
I dropped a stone from the highest peak
and listened for the sound.
I ran and jumped.
I skipped. I thumped
Without a single care but when I reached the crossroad,
A voice behind me loud and clear
spoke out of the wind, "Go there."
