Hearing God SpeakHearing God Speak
By Toni Smothers

When you are listening for God's voice, how do you know if what you’re sensing is of God or yourself, or even Satan?

People say, "I’m asking the Lord for direction in my life, but it's like I'm hearing my own voice – only not exactly. How do I know that God is the one who is speaking to me, or if Satan is telling me something to trick me? Or am I just talking to myself? I’m so confused; sometimes I think I might be just making it all up in my head?"

Jesus says, "My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me" (John 10:27). Knowing when it’s God's voice responding to your need can be as normal and natural as breathing in and out for a Spirit-filled, committed, believer. But the newborn lamb has to learn the sound of the shepherd's voice. A mature sheep has been there for a while and knows the shepherd's voice because he has always been its caretaker.

Question:

My best friend and I liked the same boy for a while now. She ended up in a relationship with him for about two weeks. The boy finally admitted to her that his feelings for me were stronger. My feelings for him were just as strong, but hidden. When their relationship ended, the boy and I began to spend more time together. My best friend and I both understand each other but I’m not positive that she has forgiven me. Prom is coming up soon and I don’t want to cause controversy if the boy and me go together. He would be the only person I would want to go there with but at the same time I want everyone to be happy. What should be done?

If you would like to accept God’s free offer of salvation, pray this simple prayer and by faith invite Him to fill you with His Spirit:

Dear Father, I need you. I confess that I have sinned against you by living my life as if I actually knew what I was doing. I have made many bad decisions and done many things I am ashamed of. I thank you for forgiving my sins through the blood of your precious son Jesus Christ who died on the cross for me. I now invite Jesus to take His rightful place in my heart as ruler of my life. Fill me with the Holy Spirit. I believe that you love me just as I am and I ask you to teach me how to love you back. Create in me a clean heart as you show me how to live each day for You.
