 A Lesson From The Mighty Oak

One of the simple joys in my life is sitting on my patio in the early morning with a hot cup of coffee, talking with God and admiring the wonder of daybreak. It’s as if God is sitting there with me, also sipping a cup of coffee, as we discuss the day before me. I take advantage of this "patio prayer time" as often as possible and it is always special, but when the seasons are about to change, the experience takes on a whole new dimension.
As I stepped onto my patio this morning, the usual excitement and zeal of my special time with God was absent. It had been replaced by confusion, worry, and sorrow. My daughter and son-in-law are on the brink of separation after only two years of marriage. They are both Christians, so why is this happening? My daughter says they have both changed and can no longer make the marriage work, not even for the sake of their one-year-old son.

What do you do when you want to be bad?
Do you pull the cat's tail till he screams in pain,
Or sneak outside to play in the rain?
Throw your food under the table for the dog,
Slurp your milk and make noises like a hog?
Hide all the toys from your sister or brother,
Tell a big, hairy lie to your father or mother?
What do you do when you want to be bad?
Make faces at your mother behind her back,
Walk by your sister and hit her – SMACK!
Go straight to bed without brushing your teeth,

 Too Many Cooks

I opened the oven door and the moist hot air immediately steamed up my glasses so I couldn't see. I peered over the top to get a fuzzy image of the lasagna bubbling in the pan. It smelled delicious.
An hour earlier, my daughter, Bethany, and I were discussing her writing assignment for English while I assembled the lasagna ingredients. Her task was to write a "meditation" using metaphor to ponder the "deep things of life."
She is fifteen, mind you, so she and I often have very different perspectives on what constitutes "deepness." Still, I'm the mom, and it's my job to help with homework while preparing dinner, isn't it?
