 The Voice of God

My grandson is just sixteen months old, but he is already displaying some behaviors that indicate he may have a hearing problem. I’m not talking about the kind of affliction that makes it difficult to hear sound, but the phenomenon that causes children to block certain words. For instance, he fully understands the meaning of the word "cookie", but has no comprehension of the word "no". Funny thing; his mom had problems with those same words.
This morning as I made my way to my "prayer chair", I was reminded of my grandson’s hearing problem. I nearly broke my neck dodging the minefield of toys he left scattered after his last visit. Somewhat frustrated as I sat down to begin my prayer time, I muttered, "Lord, what’s wrong with kids today? They just don’t seem to listen."
What happened next was nothing short of a miracle. I heard the voice of God!

A Father’s Love

Excitedly opening the gift, I take off the bow and unwrap the paper. I remove the box top and find the prettiest blue silk nightgown I had ever seen. Being five years old, a silky nightgown was special. The box also held an adorable stuffed raccoon and a box of candies. This was a present from the man my mother was going to marry in a few short months. I didn't know what this meant, but I knew I was getting a daddy.
I was the flower girl at the wedding and I don't remember much from that day. I have been told that all during the ceremony I kept pulling on my future daddy's sleeve saying, "Can I call you daddy now?" According to my mother, before the preacher said, "I now pronounce you husband and wife," my new daddy bent down and told me I could now call him Daddy.

 A Parent’s Prayer

Oh heavenly Father, make me a better parent. Teach me to listen patiently to what my children have to say and to answer all their questions kindly. Keep me from interrupting them or contradicting them. Make me as courteous to them as I would have them be to me.
Guard my emotions to keep me from ever laughing at their mistakes, or resorting to shame or ridicule when they displease me. May I never punish them for my own selfish satisfaction or to show my power. Help me to hold my tongue when I am out-of-sorts, Lord, and guide my words and actions that I may not tempt my child to lie or steal.
May I be guided by the Holy Spirit with the wisdom to grant all their reasonable requests, and the courage to deny them privileges that I know will do them harm. Make me fair and just and kind. And above all, Lord, help me to be an example of you for my children to love and respect, and to imitate. Amen
